Stanford Solar Farm
12 MW solar farm in the Overberg region of the Western Cape, targeting commercial and agri-processing off-takers via wheeling.

Location
Stanford sits in the Overberg, between the Western Cape's wine country and the whale coast. The region's economy runs on agriculture, tourism, and small-scale agri-processing — sectors where Eskom tariff increases hit margins hardest. The site benefits from the Western Cape's well-maintained grid infrastructure and sits within wheeling distance of commercial loads in Hermanus, Kleinmond, and the broader Overberg district. Solar irradiance is strong, and the coastal climate moderates panel temperatures, improving yield.
Project story
The Stanford project grew from AEEG's relationships in the Western Cape agricultural community. A farming family with 78 hectares of underperforming pasture approached Karen after hearing about the Oudtshoorn project through the regional farming association. The land sits on a gentle north-facing slope with excellent solar exposure and no heritage or environmental constraints.
At 12 MW, Stanford is smaller than most projects in the pipeline, but it fills a specific niche: commercial off-takers in the Overberg who need 5-15 MW of clean generation but can't justify the development costs of their own installation. The wheeling model connects Stanford's output to multiple smaller loads across the district, spreading the benefit.
The project also tests AEEG's ability to operate in the Western Cape's more regulated planning environment. The Overberg's scenic landscape protections require careful visual impact assessment and community consultation — processes that AEEG's relationship-first approach is built for.
Milestones
Initial landowner conversations and site assessment in the Overberg
Agreement secured for 78 hectares of north-facing pasture
Visual impact and environmental studies for Overberg planning compliance
Commercial discussions with Overberg agri-processing and hospitality operations
12 MW build on a 10-month timeline
Partners
Engineering partner
Technical due diligence, grid connection design, and construction oversight.
Environmental consultant
Environmental impact assessment and biodiversity management.
Grid connection consultant
Eskom TEF/BQ coordination and transmission infrastructure.
Community trust
Local community ownership structure and benefit-sharing administration.
Community impact
Stanford will bring construction employment to the Overberg — meaningful in a region where agricultural employment is seasonal and tourism-dependent. Skills transfer programs connect local workers with technical training, feeding into permanent operations roles. Community ownership terms confirmed at financial close.
Carbon displacement
* Modeled annual displacement. Assumes 20% capacity factor, SA grid emissions factor 0.95 kg CO2/kWh.
