Location

The Mokopane cluster sits north of the Waterberg in Limpopo — a region where mining and agricultural processing drive constant baseload demand, but grid reliability has deteriorated sharply. Four adjacent farming properties, each hosting a 9 MW array, share a single grid connection point. This distributed model reduces connection costs and spreads construction impact across multiple landowners. The area's flat terrain and high irradiance make it one of the most productive solar sites in the northern provinces.

Project story

The Mokopane project started as a single-farm conversation. Karen met a landowner through the Limpopo farming network whose maize yields had been declining for a decade. The lease income from a 9 MW solar installation would stabilize his household — but the grid connection costs for a single small farm were prohibitive. The solution: four adjacent farms, four arrays, one shared connection.

The distributed model is AEEG's answer to the cost barriers that keep smaller projects undeveloped. Each farm retains its agricultural identity — cattle graze, boreholes pump, seasonal workers come and go — while a 9 MW array occupies the least productive section of each property. The shared grid infrastructure brings the per-MW connection cost down to levels competitive with larger single-site projects.

Mokopane is also a test of AEEG's ability to coordinate multiple landowner relationships simultaneously. Each family has different concerns, different water constraints, different seasonal rhythms. The community trust structure covers all four farms, pooling the revenue share into a single fund that serves the broader area.
